Galvalume vs Galvanized

TYPES of Substrates Coatings

The substrate coating is one of the most important layers of protection applied to steel coils to help prevent corrosion. Two of the most popular types of substrate coatings in the metal roofing industry are Galvanized (G) and Galvalume (AZ).

Galvanized

Galvalume

100% Pure Zinc

55% Aluminum/43.5% Zinc/1.5% Silicon

Better Short Term

4 Times Better Long Term

No Rust-Through Warranty

20 - 25 Year Rust-Through Warranty

TYPES of Substrates Coatings

The heavier the substrate coating, the more years of protection you will enjoy.

Note: G90 will last 50% longer than G60.

Interior

Exterior

Recommended for interior liner panels because of the minimal protection against corrosion.

Recommended for exterior. The heavier coatings will offer superior protection against corrosion.

Paint Types

Textured - The absolute top in color retention

which results in maximum protection.

PDVF(Kynar) - A mid range choice on color retention.

Silicon Modified Polyester(SMP) - Most widely used on building products with standard protection against fading and chalking.

Layers of Protection

Baked on Paint Finish

Coated with Valspar's Weather XL paint system. The Weather XL formula ensures excellent scratch and abrasion resistance, along with superior protection against fading and chalking, all backed by Valspar's 40 Year Warranty.

Galvalume Substrate

Galvalume is a 55% aluminum/45% zinc barrier coating applied directly to the steel at the mill. It is measured by weight with the most common being AZ35 or AZ50. Metal Wholesale's Prime panels have AZ50 substrate, which is 40% thicker than AZ35.

Primer

Provides superior paint adhesion and adds an extra layer of protection.

Steel

Metal Wholesale Prime panels start with 0.0153 Grade 80 steel, with a UL Class 4 impact rating. This ensures a high-quality panel with increased dent resistance and a longer lifespan.

Pre-treatment

Improves adhesion, inhibits corrosion and increases durability of the paint finish.

Backer

Backed with a high-quality backer, adding yet another layer of protection from corrosion.
